Robert Cuckson was born in 1942 in the U.K., and grew up in Australia. His principal compositions include three chamber operas, orchestral, chamber and piano works. His Piano Trio received a number of performances by the Mannes Trio, including performances for the Philadelphia Chamber Society. In 2009, he was composer in residence at the Marlboro Festival in Vermont. His song cycle on Yiddish texts, “Der gayst funem shturem,” was performed on the Marlboro Tour in 2010, including performances in Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago and New York, and its recording was released on a “Live from the Marlboro Music Festival” CD. His Concertino for Trombone was recorded by Haim Avitsur and released on his CD “Neue Kraft Fuehlend” in 2017. Recordings of many of his works are available on Soundcloud.
He lives in New York City with his wife, pianist May Cuckson. Their daughter is the violinist Miranda Cuckson.
He teaches at the Mannes School of Music in New York City, where he is currently chair of the Techniques of Music Department and a member of the composition faculty. He taught at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia 1991-2017. In 2015, he was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award by the New School.
